My photo
London
This place represents a collection of works developed whilst living in Europe. The works range in theme from landscape, gritty urban signs, to artworks that mix biology and the landscape as an investigation into surfaces and cellular mutation. There is a mixture of drawing printmaking and painting represented here.

process

As an artist I have always been interested in surface and surface dynamics. More recently my work has undergone a radical consolidation and transformation, as a result of direct impact, having being diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer. My cancer, thankfully, was detected early and surgically removed. The event, however, propelled my artwork into a completely new direction that has raised many questions for me about, “Being”, “Surface” and “Language”, connected to the disease as a metaphor linked to our world experience.
The disease is both ephemeral and tangible, the art work, posits itself at the tension between the rational discourse of the medical world and the poetic dimension of the “Being” experience. For example, the visual culture of graphs, symbols, markers and cellular visual imagery, are blended with the landscape and layered with automatic text to create a visual and conceptual tension.

Through this body of work I am hoping to communicate an experience of the disease as a complex dynamic that has many parallels both in the broader social context and indeed in how we perceive our own lives in relation to surfaces and the dynamic of what’s happening underneath.

We will be back in Europe next year, it would be interesting to meet you for a coffee one of these days, months, years... who knows... if you are feeling curious drop me a line at michael@refiner.ee maybe we will end up close enough on the planet to sink a drink or something. Hi Anthony

I work at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Outside my building is a sculpture of a horses head. We have been told that you are the sculptor but this is all we can find out about the piece. Would you be able to tell us a little about the sculpture...does it have a name, why was it made, when was it made...etc. Thank you, Michelle

Hi Michelle

The horse head sculpture at the front of the technology center was installed in 1992, after being joint winner of the Howard Worner sculpture prize. The horse head column was part of a larger installation of two columns, a life size half renaissance horse with scaffolding, a series of Greek helmets and a woodern computer. At the time I was interested in peoples relationship with technology, the idea was that we have come so far with our techno/scientific advances, but our essential charector remains the same. That is, our advances in technology don't nessisarily make us more than what we are, or have been in the past. The sculptures had parts missing (i.e. the non completed horse head), or scaffolds of rusty steel under stainless surfaces. To some degree my broader enquirery is about surfaces and how it changes perceptions of interiors. Ihope this is of some use.
kind regard Anthony

Good afternoon Anthony P Gow...

I am Anthony M Gow. I am also incredibly uncreative. Which I can only assume is because you have my name, and steal my powers because of this fact. I am far to low on google becuase of you, some antartic explorer, and a Pirate. You are all making me look bad.

Seriously, take it down a step.

Hi Anthony,
I like the artworks. I haven't really tackled skyscapes yet. I am obsessed with horizones but I that is a location thing. Both are about space and freedom I think.
Great to see your work and catch up.

Hi Anthony,
I work at the University of Wollongong and I would like to add your metal horse head sculpture to the creative arts database. Would you be able to tell me a bit about the sculpture? Such as the title, what year it was created and the material? Finally, I noticed you said it was installed in 1992, it that the year you won the Howard Worner prize?
Also, would you be able to send me your contact details for our records?
Thank you for your help.
Kindest regards,
Julia Mackay
